I'm very pleased to present a guest puzzle (pdf, puz, pdf solution) by Matthew Stock. Matthew's a 23-year-old constructor in St. Louis, MO, where he teaches 9th-grade algebra through an Americorps-affiliated fellowship. He writes: "I've been constructing for about a year and a half now and am always looking to talk shop and collaborate with other puzzle folks!" Keep an eye out for his Universal debut this Wednesday. Enjoy!
Nice puzzle. Maybe a little inconsistent, in that only three of the four squares work with Across answers. Then again, ADs can pop up anywhere. (I like the macOS and iOS app Wipr.) I'm impressed that every answer minus the square reads as a word or abbreviation. And I thought 59-A was esp. clever.
ReplyDeleteOne clue I'd quarrel with: 44-A. Nothing really hidden, as the word solfège comes from the names of two notes, sol and fa.
I’m commenting as a happy solver, not a constructor.
Great fun.
ReplyDeleteVery nice technical construction! Having all eight entries work after modification, including the two long ones, is very elegantly done.
ReplyDeleteNice job, Matthew! Enjoy your teaching career! (My son did Teach For America in the Mississippi Delta. Similar program?)
