Terrific puzzle — it’s a pleasure to see jazz-related names beyond ELLA and ETTA in a puzzle, and with a title that nods to Miles Davis (who said something at least like that — “Play what’s not there,” I think). Thinking of Ella Fitzgerald just made me think of what might be possible with two letters removed: LAFITZGERALD? CHARLIEPARK? I’m getting carried away.
Do you mean the clue for Bill Evans to reference his struggles with substances? I think that’s a kind of unfortunate clue.
NINSIMONE is esp. clever.
As you may know, “Agra” is part of the Ellington-Strayhorn Far East Suite. And then there’s “The Mooche,” who must have always been MOOCHING.

Glad you liked it! I didn't know about Evans's struggles with addiction - that's definitely an unfortunate wording, given that.
DeleteI didn't know anything from the Far East Suite besides "Isfahan," either, so I'm filing that one away for next time I have to clue AGRA!
